Employer Spotlight – Mitch Beer Racing

Mitch Beer Racing is a vibrant medium-sized stable situated at Kembla Grange Racecourse, dedicated to creating a supportive and engaging work environment. With a strong emphasis on work-life balance, Mitch prioritizes employee development and well-being. We stepped into the stables to provide an inside look at what it’s like to work at Mitch Beer Racing.
Can you provide a quick overview of Mitch Beer Racing?
We’re a medium size stable based at Kembla Grange Racecourse where we have 50 horses in work at the track and a further 6 with our stable at the beach in Nowra.
Could you describe the culture and working environment at your organisation?
Being a younger stable we understand the importance of work-life balance and to give the opportunity to those who want to further their careers. We all work hard but we try to make coming to work as fun as possible too.
What qualities do you look for in potential employees?
Anyone who is a hard worker, keen to learn and can follow instruction. If you can bring those 3 attributes then it doesn’t always matter if you have experience with horses or not.
What does a typical week as an employee look like at Mitch Beer Racing?
We do 6 days per week at the track and a few afternoons a week, there’s the opportunity to attend race days and trials and we try to roster everyone on only every third weekend. For those who ride we try to take at least one rider a week to Nowra so they can have a morning riding at the beach, the beach is not only good for the horses but our staff too!
What opportunities for growth and advancement does Mitch offer to employees?
We are always happy to mentor and assist staff who are keen to move through the ranks. Being a small team we can’t guarantee that position will necessarily be with us but we are very happy to help and teach the right people and provide references to get your foot in the door.
Does your organisation support its employees’ well-being and how?
We understand work life balance is important which is why we aim for only every third weekend on the roster and get riders down to the beach as much as we can. We’re always looking at new and innovative ways to support our staff.
Can you share an employee success story/achievement that originated from your stable?
We currently have a young employee who completed the Silverdale Academy course and had never touched a horse. He’s now an integral part of our team, a dedicated and hard worker and a great race day handler.
