Mentorship Program Offers Exciting Opportunity For Aspiring Agents

Mentorship Program Offers Exciting Opportunity For Aspiring Agents

Young bloodstock enthusiasts are encouraged to apply for the Federation of Bloodstock Agents Australia (FBAA) Mentorship Program, with applications open from now until the end of this month.

Held for the first time in 2024, the program offers aspiring bloodstock agents the opportunity to shadow an FBAA member at a thoroughbred sale, engage in remote learning, and receive ongoing mentorship and career advice.

The Mentorship forms part of FBAA’s Strategic Plan to create pathways into the bloodstock industry and foster education and best practice.

“The aim of the mentorship is to help facilitate young people who aspire to be agents by building their level of experience and offering them strategic career advice to further their ambitions”, says the FBAA’s Jim Clarke.

“We also see it as a way for the FBAA to contribute something back towards the industry by helping advise and train young people in the correct way to do business as an agent”.

Over a 6-week period from May to June 2025, the mentorship will operate as a support system whereby the mentee can gain advice, information, and access to resources and research, helping to expand their knowledge and experience in the industry. They will also attend a sale alongside a respected agent.

The 2025 format was tweaked slightly to mirror a more traditional mentorship format.

“Based off feedback from last year’s participants, the intention is to run it like a more traditional mentorship rather than a structured work placement. It will still involve shadowing FBAA members at the National Sale on the Gold Coast but this will be complemented by ongoing guidance in relation to the mentee’s career and aspirations”, added Clarke.

Successful applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • Two years of practical hands-on horsemanship experience at stud farms and/or racing stables.
  • Aspirations to pursue a career in the bloodstock industry and a commitment to expanding knowledge and expertise within the field of bloodstock.
  • Ability and appetite to conduct research, complete written tasks, work safely around horses and follow instructions.
  • Proficiency with computer software including Microsoft Office and industry specific software databases.
  • Be willing to participate in interviews either online or in-person as well as commit to making themselves available for key dates/hours during the six-week program.

Applications close Friday 28th March, 2025.
