HTBA Irish National Stud Scholarship

The HTBA scholarship has boosted many students going on to have hugely successful careers in the breeding industry and remained in the Hunter Valley. This opportunity of a life-time will see yet another HunterBred team member heading off in 2024 to gain valuable experience and further knowledge in many aspects of Thoroughbred Breeding and Racing during their time in Ireland.
Each year the HTBA receives an amazing line up of high-quality applicants, a true credit to the studs proving the Hunter Valley is both a productive nursery of champion thoroughbreds and young leaders of the future. “We could have easily send all three finalists each year” Sub-Committee Chairman Barley Ward-Thomas said. The Hunter Valley has always prided itself in sending outstanding calibre students to the INS breeding course each year and is proud to have had such a long-standing scholarship available.
“The high calibre of candidates we send each year highlights the strong competition for this prestigious scholarship. The HTBA is confident the next successful applicant will be a great ambassador for both the Hunter Valley and Australia.
Graduates will join a long list of HTBA sponsored successors to the INS Course. Most recent graduates include Jessica Bailey (Yarraman Park 2022) Rachel Thompson (Barador Stud 2020), Tyler Frazer (Godolphin 2019), Georgie Cavanough (Vinery 2018), Damien Fitton (Arrowfield 2016) and Silver medal winner Kate Curran (Vinery 2015). Scholarship recipients return to their Studs to carry out the Breeding Season on completion of the course, gaining the knowledge from the course giving the industry in the Hunter Valley another valuable assets and high calibre team member.

Silverdale Academy Equine Internship – Summer Program

Tafe NSW and Silverdale Academy offer an immersive short course focused on the horse industry. This includes a 5-day-onsite internship at Silverdale Farm, providing hands-on experience and industry knowledge.
Participants will gain skills in safe horse handling, feed preparation, stable duties, breeding, racing, and horse care. Earn a nationally recognised qualification, opening doors to various thoroughbred industry careers. The program is designed to give you real-world experience and the credentials needed to succeed and advance in the industry.

Thoroughbred Breeders Australia has launched the Fast Track program to create a pathway for talented horse people to enter our industry.
If you are passionate about horses this is an incredible opportunity: you will be employed and mentored on a respected stud farm; gain a formal qualification, plus have the opportunity to learn from leaders in the global horse industry.
The 12-month program provides an accelerated introduction and learning experience that will help Fast Track graduates progress quickly in careers in the breeding industry.

Agrifutures Les Young Scholarship

The AgriFutures Thoroughbred Horses Program is proud to support a scholarship honouring the late Les Young, a prominent figure within the thoroughbred industry.
The Les Young Scholarship provides young people within the thoroughbred industry the opportunity to further develop their skills and knowledge via an international course and paid placement at a reputable United Kingdom.
This scholarship will continue Les’ legacy as a supporter and mentor in the industry he dedicated so much to by providing young people the opportunity to further their skills and knowledge.
The scholarship will provide funding and support to the successful applicant via a combination of theory coursework and a paid placement with an international horse stud in the United Kingdom or Irish National Stud where they will develop further understanding around foaling and breeding, bloodstock husbandry and stable and equine management. All travel and accommodation will be covered by the scholarship.
To be considered for the scholarship, applicants should be aged between 18 and 25 years, have at least two years industry experience in breeding, bloodstock, spelling or racing, as well as a passion to remain part of the industry as their career progresses.

Equip yourself with the theoretical and practical skills for a rewarding career as a para-veterinary healthcare specialist, working in animal health and welfare.
In the Bachelor of Veterinary Technology, you’ll study basic sciences (chemistry, biochemistry, mathematics), animal handling and care, welfare and behaviour, applied and clinical nutrition, mechanisms of animal disease and diagnostic techniques. You’ll also learn about clinical aspects of small and large animal health, therapeutics, surgical and medical nursing principles, and veterinary practice management.
As you progress through the program, you can choose from a wide range of elective courses including agribusiness, equine science, wildlife science and animal production. You can also enhance your skills by concurrently enrolling in the Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, the Certificate III in Rural Operations or the Farm Ready program.
You’ll graduate with the skills and knowledge to pursue a career in a broad array of industries including clinical, commercial, research, education, diagnostics, zoos, poultry, cattle and horse enterprises.
The Bachelor of Veterinary Technology may be used as a pathway into the Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours) program.
Certificate II in Racing Industry (Stablehand)

Team Thoroughbred NSW Training Academy is proud to offer the RGR20221 Certificate II in Racing Industry (Stablehand) traineeship program. The program involves both scheduled classroom learning activities and workplace-based training and assessment. This program provides learners with skills and knowledge required in the handling and the care and training of Thoroughbred horses, and to improve their employment opportunities.
This qualification reflects the role of new entrants to the racing industry. It provides an introduction to the racing industry and allows for specialisation in sectors or roles, including stablehand (thoroughbred).
Certificate III in Equine Studies

If you’re passionate about horses and interested in a career in the equine industry, the Certificate III in Equine Studies (22513VIC) is the perfect qualification to get you started. This course is designed to give students a strong understanding of working with horses and studying topics such as behaviour, care, nutrition, anatomy, and physiology.
This course is offered through blended learning or as part of the VDSS (VET Delivered to School Students) program. Students interested in undertaking this course through VDSS need to enrol through their school.
Please note that riding horses is not part of the course delivery.
Certificate III in Equine Studies – Senior Secondary Programs, VDSS

This VCE VET program is designed as an introduction to the equine industry. In the first year of the course you will learn the skills and knowledge to work safely with horses including basic horse husbandry and care, understanding equine behaviour, daily work routines and equine anatomy.
In the second year you will learn how to identify and monitor the signs of common illness and injury in horses; understand basic horse physiology and the impact of illness and injury on horses; identify conformation in horses and develop the ability to use appropriate conformation terminology to describe the relationship between conformation, movement and function; and gain understanding of how to implement feeding programs, monitor the quality of feed, feed supplements and individual feeding habits of horses.
