Employer Spotlight – Marsh Carney Saddlery

Have you ever considered turning your passion for horses into a career in retail? A day job with a difference is one way to describe working with all of your favourite equine brands and gear on a regular basis. Marsh Carney Saddlery has been hiring passionate horse enthusiasts for over 40 years so we stepped inside to see what it is like to work in the retail sector of the horse industry.
Can you provide a quick overview of your business?
Marsh Carney Saddlery was established in 1980 by Marsh & Patricia Carney in the small town of Scone, NSW. Together, they worked to design and market a range of Australian-made saddles and strapping that they have refined over the years to the range displayed today. Over the years, the single store has grown to include two more retail outlets, Dubbo and Tamworth. The stores stock and retail a vast range of internationally recognised brands showcased alongside their Australian-made products.
What roles and opportunities are generally offered by your business?
Marsh Carney Saddlery offers a variety of roles, from retail traineeships to store management and various administrative positions.
What qualities do you look for in potential employees?
Marsh & Patricia Carney pride themselves on ensuring that all potential employees share their passion for providing a personalised shopping experience for their local and loyal customers. Potential employees must display a passion for customer service, efficiency and productivity.
Could you describe the culture and working environment at your organisation?
The business is family-owned and operated. This means that all staff work alongside members of the family – this makes for a friendly and close-knit team environment.

What opportunities for growth and advancement does your company offer to its employees, and how does your organisation support its employees’ well-being and professional development?
Employees within the team come from all different backgrounds and equine pursuits. This ensures that all team members have access and exposure to grow and develop their equine and retail trade skills. Working within the team allows team members to expand their roles; this could include additional tasks and interests; for example, team members who are interested in merchandising can pursue this within the store and share their learnings with other team members across all stores.
