Employer Spotlight – Newgate Farm

In 2024, Newgate has marked a series of remarkable achievements in the sales ring, on the racetrack, and within their team. As part of our new Employer Spotlight Series, we shine a light on what opportunities you might find beyond the front gates of one of Australia’s powerhouse stallion operations and thoroughbred nurseries.

About Newgate Farm:

Newgate was founded by Henry Field in 2010 with only a handful of mares on a 250-acre leased property. Having travelled to the world’s major racing and breeding jurisdictions and gaining experience with some of the world’s leading bloodstock operations, Henry set out with a vision of building Australia’s leading stallion operation. Today, Newgate is one of Australia’s powerhouse stallion operations and thoroughbred nurseries encompassing 1,700 acres of prime Hunter Valley land.

Newgate’s aggressive growth over the last decade has been built on the foundations of both the integrity of its people and the quality of its bloodstock. In 2024, Newgate is home to 17 stallions including Australia’s most elite stallion statistically, Extreme Choice and one of the best broodmare bands in the country.

What roles and opportunities are generally offered by Newgate?

Newgate offers a variety of roles and opportunities, including positions within our broodmare team, our stallion team,  yearling preparation, and within our farm team. We’re committed to providing our people with the skills and growth to maximise their own potential.

Our ideal employees are individuals who are passionate about the thoroughbred industry and are committed to the highest level of horse care. A willingness to learn and perform to their highest possible potential are the most important attributes we seek in our team. Experience in the industry or other equine pursuits is a plus.

Could you describe the culture and working environment at the farm?

Newgate is a dynamic and exciting business. The business itself is young, as is our team, which creates a driven culture of excitement. We foster a team-oriented environment where everyone’s contributions are valued. Our working environment can be fast-paced, particularly during the breeding and sales seasons so we love to have people join the team with plenty of enthusiasm and positive attitudes.

What opportunities for growth and advancement does Newgate offer to its employees?

Newgate Farm is committed to the professional growth and advancement of its employees. Over the years we have assisted many employees with the next stages of their careers, be it travelling overseas or furthering their education. We look to create a dynamic learning environment where the senior members of our team support everyone to reach their maximum potential through daily guidance, external courses and in house seminars.

How does your organisation support its employees’ well-being and professional development?

Within Newgate the management team are very experienced in providing mentorship and career guidance to help employees achieve their professional goals. Additionally, we also ensure that each employee has a thorough awareness of the Thoroughbred Breeders Australia Stud Staff Support Line, which is a mental health and wellbeing support service for those working in the breeding industry.

Is there a recent farm or employee achievement that Newgate is especially proud of?
