Horse Trainer – Full-time

Yulong is seeking highly motivated and adaptive individuals to join our growing team in the full-time roles of Horse Trainer/Breeding, Horse Trainer/Breeding-Stallions and Horse Trainer/Breeding-Yearlings.

Yulong is a growing thoroughbred stud operation based in Nagambie, Victoria comprised of four farms, three of which are an easy drive to Melbourne. The breeding side of the operation, Yulong Stud and Yulong Farm, are located in the beautiful wine region of Nagambie VIC 3608. Whilst the spelling farm, Yulong Park, located in Bayles, is a short drive to the Mornington Peninsula. Yulong also has a regional farm located in Rouchel, NSW 2336.

Spread over 6,000 acres, Yulong currently has 13 resident stallions and 700 broodmares with over 350 foals to yearlings. Consigning yearlings at all major sales throughout Australia, and a racing team of 200 plus horses gives the Veterinarians great job variety and exposure to all aspects of the business.

Horse Trainer/Breeding – Night Foaling & Foaling Manager

Duties will include:
o Training broodmares and young stock
o Monitoring and handling of mares imminently in foal
o Foaling, including pre- and post-natal care of broodmares and foals
o Monitoring mare ovulation and pregnancy
o Early education of foals and young stock
o Educating and preparing weanlings and yearlings for sale
o Overseeing daily care and supervision of horses and staff supervision where required
o Assisting Veterinarians with ultrasound/reproduction examination including assisting in birthing foals and administering medical treatment to foals

Horse Trainer/Breeding - Foaling

Duties will include:
o Overseeing daily care and supervision of horses
o Early education of young stock
o Foaling, including pre- and post-natal care of broodmares and foals
o Assisting Veterinarians with ultrasound/reproduction examination including assisting in birthing foals and administering medical treatment to foals
o Monitoring mare ovulation and pregnancy
o Preparing Yearlings for sale

Horse Trainer/Breeding - Stallions

Duties will include:
o Educating stallions in breeding shed routine
o Monitoring and maintaining the health and condition of the stallions
o Re-educate stallions to resolve bad habits such as biting and kicking or inappropriate behaviour with mares
o Assisting with all daily duties required in the stallion barn including exercising and lunging.
o Overseeing daily care and supervision of horses

Horse Trainer/Breeding - Yearlings

Duties will include:
o Training and preparing horses for major sales
o Educating horses to be groomed and accept bridle, head collar, rug etc.
o Teaching horses to walk, stand and parade correctly
o Parade and caring for horses at sales
o Overseeing daily care and supervision of horses
o Re-educating horses to resolve problems such as biting and kicking
o Overseeing/training breeding mares and weanlings when required

The salary will be above award – in the range of $75,000 to above $100,000 per annum depending upon the skill set and level of responsibility.

Essential Skills:

All applicants must have a minimum of 3-years full-time professional experience in the role or a relevant qualification and at least 2 years full-time professional experience in the role.

In addition, the following will be required:

• Knowledge and experience of horse training and handling methods specific to thoroughbred breeding
• Proven ability to train and educate young horses
• Proven as reliable workers, with excellent horsemanship skills
• Knowledge of safe operation of all equipment and use of personal protective equipment
