Job Description
The Financial Controller is responsible for the leadership and management of all financial operations across the organisation. The role safeguards the financial integrity of the business by overseeing financial reporting, budgeting, cash flow, compliance, and internal controls, while providing the Chief Executive Officer and Directors/ LPR Owners with accurate, timely, and insightful financial information to support business decision-making.
Given the seasonal and asset-intensive nature of the equine training industry – including livestock, competition and training fees, feed and veterinary costs, and specialised equipment – the Financial Controller plays a critical role in ensuring robust financial management practices that reflect the unique operating rhythms of the business, while maintaining full compliance with statutory and regulatory obligations.
Job Responsibilities
• Lead the finance function by supervising and developing a high-performing finance team.
• Provide data driven and insightful operational financial advice to support the CEO, Directors and LPR Owners.
• Work in collaboration with Outsource CFO function and payroll function to support business planning and decision-making.
Financial Reporting & Analysis
• Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards.
• Deliver management reports and business performance analysis, including profitability by service line and/or location (training programs, competition coaching, spelling/rehabilitation, etc.), to support operational business decisions making.
• Financial reporting to include, actual to budget analysis and forecast
• Implement and monitor KPIs for key financial drivers across the organisation to enable effective operational business decision making
• Present financial results and key insights to the CEO, Directors and LPR Owners, highlighting risks, opportunities, and variances.
Budgeting & Forecasting
• Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with the business.
• Develop rolling cash flow forecasts that account for seasonal fluctuations (i.e. competition calendars and feed/veterinary cost cycles).
• Monitor performance against budget and provide corrective recommendations.
• Development quarterly forecast
Cash Flow & Working Capital
• Manage day-to-day cash flow, banking relationships, and working capital to ensure the business can meet operational commitments (staff, feed suppliers, veterinary services, etc.).
• Oversee accounts receivable and payable functions, including client billing / invoicing / statements.
Compliance & Risk Management
• Ensure compliance with taxation obligations (GST, PAYG, FBT, income tax) and liaise with external accountants/auditors, as required.
• Maintain robust internal controls over cash handling, livestock and equipment asset registers, and inventory (i.e. feed and supplies).
• Ensure compliance with relevant industry, animal welfare, and workplace health and safety financial reporting requirements.
• Manage insurance arrangements relevant to livestock, equipment, property, and public liability.
People-Related Costs
• Support workforce planning through labour cost analysis and rostering insights.
Systems, Controls, Processing and Process Improvement
• Maintain and continuously improve financial systems, chart of accounts, and reporting tools.
• Implement and monitor internal controls to safeguard business assets.
• Identify opportunities for automation and efficiency in financial processes to improvements to improve efficiency, accuracy and reporting capability.
• System owner for all financial information systems including PRISM and Xero (but not limited to).
• Operational integration of PRISM - Uplift and optimise the use of PRISM across the organisation to minimise manual processes and tasks.
• Process the Accounts Payables of the LPR & LPB businesses using M-Files and Xero software
• Prepare NAB files for payments to Creditors
• Process owner refunds for prizemoney received
• Update Monthly LPB holding costs
• Update Monthly Annual & Long Service Leave balances and process Monthly Accounting journals
• Reconcile Credit Card Statements
• Reconcile LPR Balance Sheet items in Workpapers
• Prepare, maintain and reconcile HP amortization tables
• Maintain in conjunction with RSM the Asset Register
Business Partnering
• Act as a trusted financial advisor to the CEO, Directors and LPR Owners, supporting decisions on capital expenditure (e.g. facility upgrades, equipment, horse acquisitions).
• Be onsite and actively engage with the business to better understand the finance support required
• Contribute financial modelling and analysis to support new service offerings, pricing strategy, and business growth initiatives.

Job Requirements
• CPA or CA qualified.
• Minimum 8 years' experience in a financial management and/or controller role, ideally within an horse racing sector, agribusiness, agistment, hospitality, or service-based industry.
• Demonstrated experience managing budgets, cash flow, and statutory compliance in a small-to-medium enterprise environment.
• Strong proficiency in accounting software (e.g. Xero) and Microsoft Excel.
• Proficient in learning and supporting the use of operational systems that generate financial transactions
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate financial information for non-financial stakeholders, including trainers and other operational staff.
• An appreciation of, or genuine interest in, the equine industry and its operational and seasonal characteristics (highly regarded, not essential).
• High level of integrity, attention to detail, and sound judgement in decision-making.
• Strong financial analysis, reporting and commercial acumen.
Other Requirements
• Current driver's licence and willingness to travel between the organisation's sites as required (being onsite at each location once fortnight).
• Ability to work occasionally outside standard business hours to align with competition seasons and/or reporting deadlines.
• Comply with all workplace health and safety policies, including those specific to working around horses and equestrian facilities.
• Willingness to undergo a National Police Check as a condition of employment.
