Proof It’s Never Too Late to Follow a Passion
Sometimes the best career journeys begin with an unexpected change of direction, and for Venessa Merrin, a passion for horses has led to a whole new chapter in life.
Having never worked in the thoroughbred industry, Venessa’s introduction to horses began just six years ago when she started riding lessons. What started as a newfound interest quickly developed into a passion, with an invitation to the Magic Millions sparking her curiosity about the thoroughbred industry.
Intrigued by the world of breeding and eager to learn more, Venessa began searching for opportunities to expand her knowledge of horse care and the industry. It was during this search that she discovered Thoroughbred Breeders Australia’s (TBA) Stud Start Program, an initiative designed to introduce people to the industry and provide pathways for those looking to change careers.
“I was intrigued and excited to learn as much as I could but was totally out of my depth,” Venessa recalls.
Despite having no previous industry experience, she applied for the program, admitting that at 62 she thought it was a long shot.
It turned out to be one of the best decisions she had made.
“I am so grateful that TBA gave me an opportunity to study with them. It opened a whole new world for me,” she said.
The Stud Start Program provided Venessa with a comprehensive introduction to the thoroughbred industry, offering practical learning opportunities, access to stud farms and the chance to learn directly from experienced industry professionals.
While completing the practical component of the course in Scone, Venessa also discovered an opportunity to further her studies through TAFE, enrolling in a Foaling Course to complement her equine studies.
The combination of learning and hands-on experience gave her the confidence to take the next step, ultimately leading her to a seasonal position at Vinery Stud as a Night Foaling Attendant.
Her role involves caring for pregnant thoroughbred mares during the final stages of pregnancy, assisting with deliveries when required and providing immediate care for newborn foals.
With approximately 150 to 170 mares on the farm each season, it is a role that carries significant responsibility, with the health and wellbeing of every mare and foal at the heart of her work.
For Venessa, however, the greatest reward is also the most special.
“The joy of witnessing the birth of a foal is a highlight and gift that just keeps giving,” she said.

“Each and every birth is unique, every mare reacts differently to the experience. It is Mother Nature at work, and I get to witness the first interaction between a mother and foal and it warms my heart. I feel honoured to be part of that experience.”
Among the many horses she has encountered, one mare holds a particularly special place in her heart. Miss Reef and her Star Turn colt have left a lasting impression on Venessa, who developed a strong connection with the gentle, friendly mare when she first started at Vinery.
She is equally grateful for the people who have supported her along the way, particularly her TBA instructor and TAFE teacher, Jo Parks, whose encouragement and mentorship helped guide her through the learning process.
Venessa also acknowledges Dave White at Vinery for giving her the opportunity to get started in the industry.
Reflecting on her journey, it is clear that stepping outside her comfort zone has been just as rewarding as the career itself. From feeling completely intimidated at the beginning of the Stud Start Program to embracing every learning opportunity, Venessa has discovered an industry full of people willing to share their knowledge and encourage others.
Her message to anyone considering a career in the thoroughbred industry, regardless of age or previous experience, is simple.
“Do it. I’m so happy I took that big leap of faith. There is not a person in this industry that I have met that has not been anything but friendly, encouraging and willing to share their knowledge. Horse people are the best people!”
And while Venessa has already achieved so much in her new career, she is far from finished. With plenty still to learn and new experiences around every corner, she is excited about what the future may hold.
“I still have so much to learn and I’m inspired at every turn. I know there is more to achieve in this industry for me and I look forward to where it will take me in the future.”
For Venessa, what began as a passion for horses has become something much more – proof that it is never too late to pursue a new interest, embrace a challenge and find an entirely new career path.
