Equine Veterinary Nurse/Vet Technician

Gundy Veterinary Services Pty Ltd is seeking to employ an experienced equine veterinary nurse or qualified veterinary technician with well-established skills and prior experience in equine nursing.

Gundy Veterinary Services (GVS) provides sole resident veterinary care for Arrowfield Stud, a large thoroughbred stud in The Hunter Valley, NSW. The Farm is home to approximately 350-400 resident broodmares, their foals and yearlings to sales age. The adjacent Training Centre manages ~60 racehorses in race training and associated spelling stock.

The nursing role supports three resident veterinarians on site at Arrowfield Stud. The role is diverse and encompasses a range of duties that extend beyond hands on nursing. The current nursing role does not involve reception or external invoicing duties, however familiarity with stud software Ardex and Microsoft office is considered desirable. The resident nurse is not required to perform routine stud staff duties.

Duties include but are not limited to:

Liaise with wholesalers, sales reps and other service providers to maintain pharmacy, veterinary stock and the distribution of consumables. Familiarity and strict adherence to all legal requirements associated with prescription medication.

Assist with equine imaging including radiography, endoscopy and ultrasonography, incl. record and upload/store images.

On-site laboratory including haematology, biochemistry, blood gas, SAA, DVM IgG and cytospin. Routine onsite cytology and culture, ID and sensitivity of common pathogens. During the breeding season laboratory processing of routine mare reproductive samples is an integral part of the role. Prior experience or keen interest in the laboratory is considered beneficial; additional clinical pathology training offered. Complex and more advanced laboratory tests are referred to offsite labs.

On-site FEC machine to facilitate the monitoring of the farm’s parasite management program, incl. processing, data entry and reporting.

Surgical nursing – involving minor standing procedures and short surgical procedures under field anaesthesia. Familiarity with surgical nursing, sterilization and maintenance of surgical equipment.

Medical nursing – low to mid-range ICU, including familiarity with long stay catheter care, fluid therapy and preferably experience in neonatal care. High level ICU cases are referred to a nearby referral hospital.

Routine maintenance and scheduling of service and repair of all veterinary equipment.

Assisting and implementing biosecurity measures and maintenance of quarantine.

Our resident veterinary nurse is required to work in an autonomous manner. Self-motivation, drive and initiative are highly desirable. The vet nurse communicates across all areas of the farm and is the central point for most veterinary matters. A cheerful and helpful disposition is imperative with a “can-do’ attitude. We are a small and fun team who genuinely bring a sense of enthusiasm and enjoyment to the working environment.

The salary will be above award and in the range of $70,000- $75,000 per annum depending on the skill set. We routinely provide a car for work use and on farm accommodation may be negotiated.

Essential skills: Applicants must have a relevant qualification and at least 2 years full time professional experience in the field as an equine veterinary technician or equine veterinary nurse.

Horse Trainer/2nd Foreperson

Michael Freedman Racing Pty Ltd are currently seeking highly experienced and capable staff to join their stable. Positions are full-time and available at Randwick.

The successful applicant/s must be able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of industry best practice, with either international experience or a thorough understanding of the global trends of the thoroughbred industry.

Horse Trainer/2nd Foreperson:
1. Plan and implement training regimes and feeding plans and reviewing and making adjustments when necessary
2. Training young thoroughbreds to be accustomed to race day events and procedures
3. Re-educating horses to resolve problems such as biting, kicking and barrier issues
4. Advise head trainer on factors affecting horses and their education
5. Supervise horse feeding program to ensure optimum fitness and performance
6. Record all horse training data and ensuring accurate and up to date records are maintained for all veterinary, horse health and racing related activities
7. Attend race day events and performing all duties associated including travelling with horses, strapping at races and all care for the horses as required, including presenting horses to stewards

Terms of Employment
The salary will be above award – in the range of $70,000 to $80,000 per annum depending upon the level of skill.
